The Design committee is very proud to be moving forward on two goals:
1)The creation of Cameron Park Design Guidelines fro commercial and multi-family housing development.
2)The creation of a Cameron Park Specific Plan.

We are very excited about what the future holds fgor Cameron Park and it’s residents. We ask that you join us in making Cameron Park A Special Place to Live……and Work.

My wife and I are long term residents of Cameron Park, over 32 years. We have witnessed many changes in this are–said to be “A Special Place To Live”. The streets were all bordered with cobble rock, Cambridge Rd speed limmit was 50 mph, there were no signals, the only hamburger place was called the “Burger Barn”, the best dining was at the Lillian Russel Room in Sam’s Town, and Safeway was just opening their new supermarket.

The area has seen tremendous growth since that time; however, not the equal of El Dorado Hills. The increase in population has warranted the addition of new traffic signals along Cameron Park Drive and at the ends of Cambridge Rd. Property tax bills have increased over 100%
since 1977. We still pay among the state’s highest rates for utilities (electricity, water & sewer, refuse collection). The increase in traffic is so severe that it is not safe to walk the dog, ride a bicycle, or walk two abreast on any street without fear of being hit by a car, schoolbus, or worse yet a van or semi. Speed control is non-existent! The streets and roads are only lined with litter and muddy gutters, no more cobbles. Residential landscaping spans from non-existent, to unkept, to exceptionally maintained, with no consistency.
In short, Cameron Park is No Longer “A Special Place To Live”. There is absolutely no sense of “community” now, property values are substantially lower than El Dorado Hills,CC&R’s are non-existent and uninforceable, and safety of its residents is of apparent no concern. Changes and attitudes of the governing body of Cameron Park (CPCSD) need to change and reflect the needs of those it supposedly represents. This can only be accomplished by eliminating the cronyism that exists in the Board and recruiting those that would like to do whatever it takes to upgrade the image and quality of life in Cameron Park.

As Chairperson of the Cameron Park Design Review Committee I am proud to announce that the Cameron Park Vision Subcommittee has been filled. The subcommittee is meeting regularly to determine its public process to meet their goal of creating a vision statement for inclusion into future planning documents for Cameron Park.
I would also like take a moment to address post by Mr. Dellner. I do not disagree that Cameron Park has in recent years fallen short of creating a Special Place to Live. I also do understand that there is some discontent with the current CSD. I would like to say, without being an apologist, that the CSD is not responsible for many of the issues that our community is facing. The CSD is responsible for Fire, Parks and Recreation. The roads and muddy gutters and lack of cobble are issues that Eldorado County is responsible for. The county is responsible for issues such as land use, development and law enforcement. Through the general plan and the implementation of the general plan the county, more distinctly, defines what the future holds for Cameron Park. This is where the Design Review Committee comes in. As a County appointed committee were are responsible to make recommendations to the Board of Supervisors about what our residents want in Cameron Park. We are taking that task very seriously. We as a committee are committed to two goals: First, to create, for recommendation to the Board of Supervisors, a set of Design Guidelines. The guidelines will put in place the desired aesthetic for commercial and multifamily housing in Cameron Park. Topics such as landscaping standards, building materials and signage will be clearly defined in the design guidelines. Second, the committee will create a Specific Plan for recommendation to the Board of Supervisors. Once adopted the specific plan will deal with issues such as land use, circulation, trails and parks. These are exiting times in Cameron Park. I urge anyone disillusioned in the current direction Cameron Park has taken to please become involved in the process. Only with your help can we succeed!

I have been a resident of Cameron Park for over 7 years and have enjoyed the Community. I do believe that Cameron Park is a special place to live!

I have only one question! When will we start to see walking paths in Cameron Park? Are there any walking paths in the future for Cameron Park?

Thanks for all your hard work so far. The community Center looks great!

    Tracey,
Thank you for your comments. You are absolutely correct! Cameron Park would benefit greatly from walking, biking and riding trails. We are currently working towards completing a trail master plan for Cameron Park which would need to be approved by the Board of Supervisors. A trail system at this stage of the communities development needs to be a series of connecting pedestrian/bikeways. The trail system would be made up of Class I ped/bikeways, (off street ped/bike paths),Class II bikeways, (on street Bike Lanes) and Class III bikeways (Bike routes). Bike Routes are roads without marked bike lanes but designated as routes and are usually connectors through residential areas. The Class I trail design needs to be wide enough to accommodate various activities such as walking and biking. Further, the roads of in Parts of Cameron Park are unsafe for walking. I encourage you to support both bike lanes (Class II bikeway) and sidewalks included in the future DOT projects. I invite you contact me at cameronparkdrc@yahoo.com for ways you can help to define our trail system in Cameron Park! For more information on future road projects please visit the county DOT web page at http://www.co.el-dorado.ca.us/dot/
Thank you for checking in and please keep in touch!

We would like to try to expand the Skatepark and put in new obstacles. is there any chance of doing this?

    Apr 2nd, 2010

    Dear Skateboarders,
I will forward this request to the Community Services District. I would also suggest that you contact either Paul Ryan or Tina Helm at the CSD directly as the Skatepark is operated, I believe, by the CSD. We will also be looking at land use and parks in the future as well so please involve yourself in the public meetings as they come around. Can I ask a favor of you and your friends? We would love to see some cool pics of the Skate Park and those who use it. Would you please upload some pics to http://www.communityalmanac.org/CameronPark-CA. You will need to log in but none of the information is distributed. We are gathering information on what is important to the people that live here. Can’t wait to see the pics! Thank you for posting.

    Hello,

I’m not sure if this is the right forum for my request (Is there a CP city suggestions area?:) ) But I would like to see a dog park established in CP. I realize that their are politics involved due to the noise possibly disturbing surrounding residents, but I’ve talked with other CP residents and everyone I’ve talked to would LOVE to have a dog park. I know it would be alot of trouble dealing with the red tape and vocal opponents, but I for one think its time to step up and expand on CP’s residential fun and recreation :)

    Hello CP Resident,
I attended a CPCSD board meeting about a year ago and there was strong support to turn Hacienda Park on Cameron Park Dr. into a Dog Park. Since then I believe there are some concerns over pedestrians crossing from the west side of Cameron Park Drive to the east side where the Park is and the potential for accidents. That being said I do not know for certain where the process is. I will inquire with CSD staff. Thank you for posting. I do feel that there is a lot of support for this type of venue in Cameron Park.

Regarding the request made by the skateboarders to expand the skate park; I don’t believe that anymore money should be targeted for this park until the users take pride and ownership of their park. I took pictures recently and the park was a mess (tagging, stickers on the cement, evidence of drugs and alcohol and smoking). It should not be up to the CSD to continually clean up after these people. You need to look at Joe’s Skate Park, it is clean, the kids pick up their trash, they don’t spray paint all over the place and there are adults who volunteer to make Joe’s work.

My “vision” for Cameron Park being a “Special Place to Live” does NOT include the CDF Prison Clean Up Crew in our community. Surrounding areas, such as El Dorado Hills, are doing the right thing by keeping this potentially dangerous situation out of their community. I hope we can follow suite. Simply because the cost of hiring the prisoners is more cost effective, does not validate having them in our local parks. Hopefully others agree this is not the vision of Cameron Park we’d like to portray.

A professional charrette occurred in 2006. Will you be using that information as a starting point for the May 17 community vision meeting, since a consultant was paid for that work, and the community participated?

I appreciate that the CPDRC is going forward with visioning and design guidelines, because CP looks terrible with all sorts of different architectural and corporate design (or lack of design, period).

It is about time in our county’s communities that people who live here get to say what they think the community should look and feel like, rather than the developers doing all the planning. It is a matter of retaining/creating/improving the sense of place for the folks who live here.

When you say Specific Plan, do you mean that in the precise planning terminology, or do you mean an “Area Plan”?

    Apr 29th, 2010

    Dear Monique,
Thank you for your comments. I hope you will be able to attend the “Create the Vision” Workshop at the Cameron Park Community Center on May 17th at 6:30pm. I can’t express how excited we are to move forward with this first step. To answer your first question; We have obtained the results of the workshop you mentioned (RRM workshop completed June ‘08), at least the statistical results. We have not been successful at recovering any of the visual aids that were created at the workshop held at Carlton Engineering. There has also been a Chamber of Commerce web survey conducted that asked some good planning questions as well. We are utilizing both of those pieces in conjunction with the information we will gather at the upcoming workshop to help formulate the draft Vision Statement to be issued and commented on by the community before final recognition by the Board of Supervisors. I want to make sure that every resident, land owner, business owner understands that this is the first step in a process that we (the CPDRC) are completley committed to. We are completly committed to implementing the communitiies vision. We all should also understand that it will not be successfull with the assistance of just a few, but rather a commitment by all, residents, landowners, and the county.
To answer your second question regarding a specific plan; this is of serious debate at the moment and I cannot fully answer that question. But I will try to do my best. It seems that you are familiar with the planning process so I am sure you are aware of the many implications of a specific plan, not the least of which are the CEQA implications. There are other ways to accomplish similar results and we are trying to look at them all. Zoning overlays, expanding DRC review responsibilities etc. We are not all in agreement. That is not to suggest that we are not in agreement that something along these lines must be done. We as a community need to come to terms with the best outcome and process for all after we have a better understanding of what it is the community desires as an outcome. You should know that there is significant formal discussions occuring at the county level regardng form based codes and community visioning. We are doing our very best to stay with that discussion, and, to keep Cameron Park in the middle of that discussion. I hope that answers your questions and I would appreciate meeting you at the workshop. Since it seems you have some passion regarding on subject I would like to ask if you have a desire to become more involved directly. Please email me at driever.eric@yahoo.com or at cameronparkdrc@yahoo.com
Thank you for your post and I hope you will invite all of your Cameron Park Friends to the Workshop!

To responnd more fully to a CP Resident regarding the desire for a dog park and where it may go. I did find a website for an organization called eldorado Dog Owners Guild. You can see information about the Cameron Park Dog Park on their webpage http://www.cpdog.org/. I would strongly suggest you contact them regarding specific ways you can become involved in that effort. I hope you will also attend the “Create the Vision” Workshop on May 17th at 6:30 pm at the new Community Center. We need all your thought and ideas.
    Thank you for posting.

I am so excited that Cameron Park is doing this. I’ve only lived here for 5 years and concur with all of the statements. More specifically, issues related to lack of sidewalks or speed bumps down busy residential streets such as Sudbury. My husband I are always trying to avoid getting hit by cars when taking walks. Limited or dim street lighting, limited parks, and what’s up with the awful design of new business buildings? I find myself ALWAYS going to EDH Town Center or Folsom just to hang out or visit the dog park. I love the people in Cameron Park and feel we’d be an even tighter community if we had incentives to stay and gather in our own community. I’ll definitely be there on May 17th!

    Lisa,
Thank you so much for your post! I feel exactly as you do as does our committee members. All that is left to do is come in force to the workshop. At the workshop you can expect to see members of the Planning commission, DOT, the transportation commission, the Board of Supervisors and many more. All supporting this effort. With that said we need to get as much of the community there to represent a strong segment of the community. Without a good chunk of residents and business owners there it is difficult to make the argument that we represent the communities opinions. Keep a positive outlook and bring as many friends as you can! We look on with great optimism to the future!

It would be great to have sidewalks on all our busy roads. Green Valley so kids can walk to school. CP Drive, Cambridge and Bass Lake, so many many more kids can walk to school. The schools complain about the traffic, yet we cant have the kids walk to school. Were keep getting preacher to about childhood obesity, yet we cant walk anywhere without taking a big risk with our life. Thank you for getting CVS opened near my house. And what happened to the Mini Golf/Bowling alley plan? We really need something to do up here.

Hello. I’d like to recommend that a convex traffic mirror be installed at the intersection of Country Club and Merrychase. Traffic backs up on C/C during school drop-off time and attempting to make a left turn onto C/C from Merrychase is dangerous due to the inability to see westbound traffic on C/C (because of the traffic backed up on eastbound C/C). I don’t think this would be too expensive and it could help prevent a bad accident. Thanks.

One of the first views of Cameron Park experienced by many is the ugly over-growth of weeds and shrubs along the west side of Cameron Park Drive from our “Special Place to Live” sign to Hacienda Road. We’ve lived here for 20 years and attempted several times to find out who is responsible for cleaning up this mess. No state or county department or Cameron Park CSD would claim responsibility; each saying the other should clean it up. Now is the time to fix this mess, and help realize the vision that this is “A Special Place to Live.”

  33. Eric Driever

    Jun 12th, 2010

    Dear CP Resident and Dave,
At the workshop there were a few very clear messages. Bike/Ped was one of those messages that we intend on pushing to the forefront of discussions at every opportunity. The Eldorado County Transportation commission completed a walkability and bikeability audit of the Eldorado County Schools as part of “Smart Routes to School” program. The links to these pages follow:

    http://www.edctc.org/WalkBikeAudits.htm
    http://www.smartroutestoschool.com/
    http://www.edctc.org/non%20agenda%20pdf/WalkBikeAudits/Buckeye%20Union.pdf

While I do not feel that the recommendations go far enough and I question some of the specific understanding of traffic on the connecting streets as it related to Camerado and Blue Oak I am glad to see that these studies are being done. I would like to see more emphasis by the county on the issue of alternative transportation. We do intend on focusing strongly on this issue.

Thank you for posting. It is through evidence such as this that we will be able to make strong recommendations to our elected officials.
    Eric Driever
